Voice/Data Multiplexing
With Utilicom Wireless Modems

By using our 2200 voice/data multiplexer, two voice channels and one data channel can be multiplexed over the Utilicom ISM band radio-modems to save communications costs. This system uses license-free ISM band radios to replace telephone lines. License-free 900 Mhz and 2.4Ghz radios from Utilicom are highly reliable cost effective telephone line replacements.

Some ISM band radios will not work. The radios must provide reasonable "turn-around" time to offer full duplex operation. They must also operate at 56Kbps sync, supplying synchronous clock.

Radio Setup

The Utilicom radios are installed as usual. At DCB, we used the ISM900-4T128 models for this demonstration. Remember that a solid line-of-sight is required. We set up the radios in a master -slave point-to-point system. The configuration we used is...

Multiplexer Setup

The 2200 multiplexers are configured the same as if they were behind DSUs on a leased DDS telephone line. They are cabled to the radios using a V.35 interface and "straight-through" cables. Clocking is set for slave (radios provide clocking).

The voice ports are configured by setting dip switches for FXS, FXO, or PLAR. If you are simply using two telephone sets and want one to ring when the other is off hook, set them both to PLAR. If using phone sets in conjunction with a PBX or telephone company phone line, you need to use FXS and FXO settings.

Data ports can be set using multiplexer dip switches the same way they would be if the multiplexer was on a leased telephone DDS line. In summary, the setup is quick, easy, and wireless voice/data multiplexing saves recurring costs.
